Evaluating the Retreat, Arrest, and Regrowth of Crane Glacier Against Marine Ice Cliff Process Models

چکیده
The fastest projected rates of sea level rise appear in models which include “the marine ice cliff instability (MICI),” a hypothesized but mostly unobserved process defined by rapid fracture and wastage terminal cliffs that outpaces viscous relaxation ice-shelf formation. Crane Glacier's response to the Larsen B Ice Shelf collapse has been invoked as evidence MICI observational record. Using available remote sensing data, we analyze Crane's retreat, arrest, regrowth over last two decades. Much terminus retreat occurred floating, not grounded ice. Retreat accelerated at least 54% during 2 years following shelf collapse. This is inconsistent with contemporaneous regional forcing promoted growth this period, consistent geometrically controlled positive feedback. We infer maximum possible height 111 m, according models, could enable calving assuming damaged

Potential Antarctic Ice Sheet retreat driven by hydrofracturing and ice cliff failure
a r t i c l e i n f o a b s t r a c t Keywords: ice sheet Antarctica sea level subglacial basin ice cliff hydrofracture Geological data indicate that global mean sea level has fluctuated on 10 3 to 10 6 yr time scales during the last ∼25 million years, at times reaching 20 m or more above modern. If correct, this implies substantial variations in the size of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS)....
متن کاملWill Present Day Glacier Retreat Increase Volcanic Activity? Stress induced by Recent Glacier Retreat and its Effect on Magmatism at the Vatnajökull ice cap, Iceland
Global warming causes retreat of ice caps and ice sheets. Can melting glaciers trigger increased volcanic activity? Since 1890 the largest ice cap of Iceland, Vatnajökull, with an area of ~8000 km, has been continuously retreating losing about 10% of its mass during last century. Present-day uplift around the ice cap is as high as 25 mm/yr. We evaluate interactions between ongoing glacio-isosta...
متن کاملQuantifying ice cliff evolution with multi-temporal point clouds on the debris-covered Khumbu Glacier, Nepal
Measurements of glacier ice cliff evolution are sparse, but where they do exist, they indicate that such areas of exposed ice contribute a disproportionate amount of melt to the glacier ablation budget. We used Structure from Motion photogrammetry with Multi-View Stereo to derive 3-D point clouds for nine ice cliffs on Khumbu Glacier, Nepal (in November 2015, May 2016 and October 2016). By diff...
متن کاملRecord ice retreat
The European Space Agency said that a series of photographs taken through September showed an ice-free passage along northern Canada, Alaska and Greenland as ice was retreating to its lowest level since images were first taken in 1978. The search for a route from the Atlantic around the top of North America and into the Pacific occupied explorers for centuries. Now a growing band of sailing adv...
